Casual employee (NZ)

A casual employee, in New Zealand, is someone engaged to work on an as-needed, irregular basis, picking up individual shifts as they're offered, rather than working a fixed, ongoing roster with guaranteed hours.

How it usually works

Casual arrangements tend to share a few features, though the detail depends on the workplace and the employment agreement:

  • No guarantee of ongoing work. A casual employee isn't promised future shifts, and generally doesn't have to accept every shift offered.
  • Shift-by-shift engagement. Each shift (or roster period) is in effect its own offer and acceptance, not a standing schedule.
  • Pay reflects the hours worked. Casual pay in NZ often includes a component for the lack of guaranteed hours and leave entitlements, compared with permanent roles.
  • Some businesses formalise casual work in a written casual employment agreement that sets out how shifts are offered and confirmed.

Where casual work fits

Casual employment suits work where demand really does vary, such as event venues, hospitality and seasonal attractions, where a fixed roster of permanent staff wouldn't match the way the work arrives. The flexibility runs both ways: employees can turn shifts down, and businesses can offer different amounts of work from one period to the next. Bid-based rostering is built for that. It publishes what's available and lets people choose, instead of assuming fixed availability.

This is a general description, not legal or employment advice. Definitions of casual employment, minimum entitlements and related obligations are set out in NZ employment law and can change. Check current guidance from Employment New Zealand before making employment decisions.

In Chronomancer

Chronomancer is built for this kind of workforce: a pool of casual contacts who request the shifts they want each period, with no assumption that they're always available, and a reliability score that comes from their attendance history rather than a fixed schedule.
